Nagula Chavithi, the Telugu festival of the serpent deities, falls on Karthika Shukla Chaturthi, four days after Deepavali. In 2026 it is on Friday, November 13 in India, the UK and the Gulf, and on Thursday, November 12 in the US and Canada. The puja is done in the morning, while Chaturthi is running.
1Why Telugu families worship the Naga devatas
Karthika is the month of Shiva, who wears the serpent Vasuki, and of Vishnu, who rests on Adishesha. On the fourth day of the bright half of Karthika, Telugu families honour the Naga devatas, the serpent deities, asking for the health and long life of their children and for freedom from sarpa dosha. In the South the serpent is closely linked with Subrahmanya, which is why Naga stones stand in so many Subrahmanya temples.
In village life the snake that lives in the anthill (putta) protects the fields from rats; honouring it with milk is also a prayer that no one in the family is harmed by snakes during the year. The day is kept with a light fast until the puja, and many families avoid digging the soil or harming any creature that day.
2How to do the Nagula Chavithi puja
- Early bath and a light fast: most families take only water or milk until the puja is done.
- Prepare the offerings: milk, turmeric, kumkum, flowers, a lamp, and naivedyam such as chalimidi, chimmili and fruits.
- At the anthill (putta), in the morning: clean the spot, apply turmeric and kumkum, light the lamp and incense, and pour milk into the anthill while praying for the family.
- At home or abroad: place a silver or clay Naga image or a picture on a plate, offer milk and naivedyam, and later pour the milk at the foot of a tree or in the garden. A visit to a Subrahmanya or Naga shrine at the temple is a good alternative.
- After the puja: share the prasadam (chalimidi, chimmili) and break the fast.

Friday, November 13, 2026 in India, the UK and the Gulf, and Thursday, November 12, 2026 in the USA and Canada. It is Karthika Shukla Chaturthi, four days after Deepavali.
Why is it a day earlier in the US?
The festival is kept on the morning when Chaturthi tithi is running. Chaturthi begins on the evening of November 12 in India, so the first Chaturthi morning there is November 13. In US time zones the same moment falls on the morning of November 12.
What is offered at the anthill?
Milk is poured into the anthill (putta), with turmeric, kumkum, flowers and naivedyam such as chalimidi (rice flour and jaggery), chimmili (sesame and jaggery) and fruits. Customs vary by family.
How can we do it abroad without an anthill?
Worship a small silver or clay Naga image, or a Naga picture, at home and offer milk in a bowl, then pour it at the foot of a tree or in a garden. Many families also visit a Subrahmanya or Naga shrine at a local temple.
Is Nagula Chavithi the same as Naga Panchami?
Both honour the serpent deities. Naga Panchami, kept across India, falls in Shravana. Nagula Chavithi is the Telugu observance in Karthika; some families keep both.
